The Eyelids & Eyelashers

What are the eyelids and eyelashes?
Eyelids are protective coverings of the eyes. They also have the ability to open and shut rapidly, which is called as blinking. Eyelashes are hair growing at the ends of the eyelids.

Where are the eyelids and eyelashes located?
The eyelids are located in front of each eye. There are two eyelids for each eye. Eyelashes are present growing at the ends of eyelids at their curvature.

How can we describe the eyelids and the eyelashes?
Eyelids are structures made of skin covering thin tissue. There are muscles present in the eyelid, which help them to squeeze tightly. The eyelids also have the ability to get approximated, i.e. come close together to ensure closure of the eyeball. This action occurs as a reflex action. (Occurring without even thinking). This ability of the eyelids prevents foreign bodies from entering the eye during sleep or when exposed to the atmosphere while awake.

The eyelashes are fine hair present at the curvature of the eyelids. These help to protect the eye as they trap or prevent harmful material from entering the eye.
